My Story
American Dream is real
From a small Ukrainian village of 180 people to the entrepreneurial journey in America
Sergii Gerasymovych was determined to build his new life in America. He had this goal after he came to the United States for the first time a year earlier through a student summer exchange program. He could only dream of such opportunities. Sergii grew up in a small Ukrainian village in the Zhytomyr region. His mother, a teacher, and father, a zootechnician, also managed a small farm to support their family. “I witnessed my parents' hard work, yet they struggled to make ends meet,” says Sergii. “I yearned for a different life.”
At age 5, he taught himself to read English using a Walt Disney storybook. Recognizing his language talent, Sergii's parents arranged for him to receive English lessons from a tutor in a neighboring village. Then he easily entered the Linguistic University in Kyiv to pursue a degree in translation.
During his second summer as a student, he traveled to America through a student summer exchange program. American work ethic inspired Sergii to establish his own business. Sergii's first experience of America could have been no better than Texas, with its scale, multi-level highways, and large enterprises. “I was amazed at the countless opportunities available in this country to establish your own business and achieve success,” says Sergii.
1996
At the age of 5, Sergii discovers The Giant Walt Disney Word Book, an illustrated vocabulary for English words for kids in the local small village school library in Ukraine. His grandmother was a librarian. She looked after Sergii while working at the library, while his parents were at work. That is when the first intersection with American culture took place, and Sergii started learning English words.
2000
Sergii's parents, in addition to their day jobs, ran a small farm where his mom did sales and was constantly on the phone. Being a kid, Sergii was already thinking about a business career and pretended to be busy by talking on a toy cell phone.
2006
After Sergii's parents hire a private English tutor for him to develop his English more in-depth, he wins a local English competition, and as a prize, he gets an opportunity to spend a month in the most prestigious international summer camp where he meets people from around the country and the world, which opens him up to traveling abroad to meet new people.
2010
Sergii Gerasymovych comes to America through a summer exchange program during his studies at Kyiv Linguistic University. His destination is Houston, Texas. This is his first time abroad, and it is in Texas, arguably the most American State of all. He always wanted to come to America and start a business. In his thoughts, that was the best place to do it.
2012
Sergii is coming back to the USA for work, but he is itching to start a company; without experience and knowledge of business but with a passionate desire to be successful. He moves to Chicago, where he starts a company in the industry he knows - translation, localization consulting services, helping companies overseas to enter the U.S. market.
2013
While building a translation, and localization agency, Sergii gains invaluable experience in what it takes to run a real company, managing people, talking to customers, meeting deadlines, and making real money. However, he sees that the market is too small for his ambitions, so he is looking for a "blue ocean" market and starts an e-commerce online store that sells coffee, coffee mugs, and accessories to capture a new trend of online selling. That is when he learns about Bitcoin as digital money. Eventually, the company gains traction but does not take off to a larger scale.
2015
By bootstrapping the business from scratch, Sergii realizes that he lacks knowledge about how to structure a company, what culture is and how to build teams. He starts visiting industry conferences, attending workshops , meeting entrepreneurs across the country to learn how other companies are run and what makes them successful.
2016
The E-commerce business ended up not being competitive and, without marketing dollars, ended up being shut down. Sergii moves on from jumping on the next new thing and spends some time in sales and marketing consulting and doing different side gigs to pay his bills while still in search of a "blue ocean" market.
2017
In early 2017, Sergii sees a huge demand for GPUs, video cards usually used for gaming. He learns that people are buying massive quantities of GPUs to "mine" Ethereum a new cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. After doing some research on the topic, Sergii gets fascinated with the technology of independent digital money and finds the opportunity in selling videos cards. His previous experience leads him to start selling video cards on eBay and he cannot keep with demand.
2018
Sergii understands that the model of reselling space is not sustainable. He quickly realizes that the main operational cost for hosting is the cost of electricity, that's why the cheapest source of electricity can be closer to the source of electricity. To get there, the company builds and designs its first mobile data center container installed next to the substation.
2021
The company is growing, becoming a place to go for hosting crypto mining services. EZ Blockchain sells mobile data centers to oil and gas companies to reduce flaring. Sergii is recognized in the Forbes 30 under 30 list.
2022-2023
Cryptocurrency market crashes. Sergii leads the company through turbulent times and unclear regulatory environment at the same time growing the company's data center locations without the outside investment bootstrapping the whole business from scratch.
2024
Sergii grows the company and looks to share his story with the rest of the world by establishing an online presence and starting his YouTube channel, where he shares insights on the crypto market and interviews executives from different companies.
